Compass Summer

Take advantage of an optional short-term summer experience in or around Newport to build the skills employers seek.

Compass Summer offers opportunities for students to spend a week as crew on a tall ship, explore the beauty of Aquidneck Island's natural resources, train animals at a local shelter, document the Newport Jazz Festival experience and so much more.

These one- or two-week immersive group projects cap off the sophomore or junior year. Choose an experience that piques your interest, whether it’s exploring a new area or diving more deeply into your academic program. Each is faculty-led, and thanks to the generosity of our donors, there is no cost for Compass Summer programs, which also provide on-campus housing.

Compass Summer gave me the opportunity to research and explore a business plan without the pressure of grades, allowing me to focus entirely on what I could help create. We walked away from Compass Summer ready to launch our business, and now we're in the process of making that a reality. The progress we made over the summer was truly the foundation for where we are today.

When choosing to come and be a part of this program, I just wanted to challenge myself with something new. Meeting great people, developing my teamwork skills and leadership skills – this is an experience I'll never forget.
