I have become a new person since going abroad. I am more independent, more confident, more dedicated, and more present in my everyday life. Those are lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, including my time here at Salve.

How to Choose a Program

Your time abroad will be life-changing, so think about it carefully. Choose an experience that complements your program of study, so start by referencing your major-specific advising guide for recommended programs.

Consider a program that will offer the most personally rewarding experience. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Does a particular geographical location interest me?
  • What do I want to get out of this experience? (language skills, international perspective on my field of study, cross-cultural experience, adventure, new perspective on potential career, resume builder, etc.)
  • What are my language skills? What is the language of instruction? (You don’t always have to know the host country’s language to study there.)
  • Do I prefer a large city or small town? A large university or small university?
  • Do I want or need to take classes for my major, minor, core requirements or electives?
  • Do I want to participate in an internship or community engagement as part of my study abroad program?
  • When do I graduate? (If you plan to study abroad close to your planned graduation date, please consult with the Center for Global Education and Fellowships.)
  • Do I want to study with a group of Americans, or would I prefer a more independent experience?
  • Do I want to live with a host family or with other Americans/international students? Do I want to live in an apartment or in a university residence?
  • Am I interested in studying for a summer, semester or year?
  • Do I want to travel on planned excursions or primarily on my own?
  • Do I plan to do additional travel before or after my program?
  • What’s my budget?
  • What are my interests, hobbies and passions?

How to Study Abroad

  1. Go to the Study Abroad Fair and/or an info session. You’ll learn about available locations, programs and institutions from students who have studied abroad and meet with representatives from organizations, study abroad alumni and exchange students.
  2. Create a ViaTRM traveler account to explore options and get matched with the perfect program.
  3. Apply for or renew your passport. Do it early, since average processing time is about 18 weeks.
  4. Meet with the Center for Global Education and Fellowships (CGEF). When you decide which country and program you’re interested in, make an appointment to discuss your plans and the application process. Also, meet with your academic advisor to verify that your proposed study abroad courses will fit in with your degree requirements.
  5. Learn how to finance study abroad. We operate under a home school tuition policy where you pay tuition to Salve when studying abroad on an approved program for a semester or academic year. Students participating in short-term programs led by Salve faculty are billed the entire program fee as dictated by the University (tuition included). Get full information on financing study abroad, or consult our CGEF and the Office of Financial Aid.
  6. Apply. Complete your application the semester before you plan to study abroad. Deadlines are:
  • May 15: Fall semester and academic year programs
  • Oct 1: Spring semester (some programs have earlier deadlines. See ViaTRM  for specifics.)
  • Varying: Short-term summer programs: See the short-term programs page
  1. Once you’re accepted, complete all required post-acceptance forms, apply for your student visa (if necessary) and make travel plans. Each semester we offer a mandatory pre-departure orientation. Prior to attending, review the information in your orientation packet and prepare to ask questions.

Application Requirements

Submit an online application through ViaTRM, which includes a goal statement, resume, a copy of your passport (if available) and two letters of recommendation.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Some programs have a GPA requirement higher than 2.7.
  • Students with a GPA below 2.7 will be considered case by case.
  • Falling out of good academic/disciplinary standing could cause approval to be revoked.

Semester/Academic Year Program Eligibility

You can apply for a semester or academic year abroad at any time. Please note that applications will be considered only after you have attained second-semester sophomore standing (at least 24 completed credits with 12-15 credits in progress) prior to your desired study abroad program.

You must take a full course load (at least 12 U.S. credits) during each semester abroad. Make sure the courses you take abroad will satisfy requirements toward your Salve degree. Most students take a combination of elective and major courses while studying abroad.

Short-Term Program Eligibility

Short-term study abroad programs are open to all students who meet general eligibility requirements regardless of class standing.
