Public Safety

Tobin Hall Public Safety

Keeping Salve Regina University students, faculty, staff and visitors safe and secure is our highest priority. The Office of Public Safety provides services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to prevent crime, provide security patrols and respond quickly to on-campus needs.

We also oversee residence hall card access systems, parking permits, shuttle services, lost and found, on-campus medical transport and bicycle registration, and offer classes and training. Our security officers are all first aid and CPR/defibrillator certified, and many are also certified emergency medical technicians.

Mobile Safety App

Salve uses the RAVE Guardian mobile security app, which acts as a virtual "blue light" phone in your pocket. We train all students, faculty and staff on this app upon arrival. With it, you can assign permission for someone to watch over you during your travels. It includes an emergency call button that delivers a safety profile and GPS coordinates directly to safety officers.

Emergency Phones

Emergency phones with direct contact to the Office of Public Safety are located throughout campus and identified with a blue light. You’ll find them in areas of high foot traffic and at the entrances to residence halls and administrative buildings.

Ruggles and the PAWS Program

Our Pawsitive Alliance with Students (PAWS) program works to build relationships in our campus community. Central to this program is Ruggles, Salve's community resource dog. Through the PAWS program, we also offer community safety classes that empower students to take an active role in maintaining a secure community at Salve.

Transportation

RIPTA provides free transportation to students with a valid Salve ID. RIPTA trolleys run through campus 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Students with valid IDs may also use any statewide RIPTA line. Maps and schedules are available on the RIPTA website.

Salve provides shuttle service to/from stops on/off campus. They’re located near residence halls, academic buildings and other University facilities and throughout Newport. All you need to board a shuttle is your valid Salve Regina ID. Track shuttles and find stops through the Passio GO app.

Shuttles operate on a designated loop and will not deviate from their route at any time. Shuttles are not permitted to pick up or drop off at any location other than the designated stops.

Emergency Preparedness and Fire Safety

Salve has designed emergency procedures to protect the University community and ensure the security of our buildings and property.

Distributed to the campus community as mandated by the Clery Act, which requires disclosure of campus security policies and the past three years of crime statistics, the annual report is published on this webpage, submitted to the Department of Education and available in hard copy. The Clery Act also requires we maintain a public crime log. Our office maintains a daily log of all incidents occurring on campus, which is available for inspection in Tobin Hall during business hours. Crimes involving violence, major property loss or felony charges are reported to the Newport Police Department. In addition, the campus community is alerted to crimes considered to be a threat to students and employees.

Helps students and employees respond quickly and effectively to a variety of medical and safety situations.

Our emergency notification system reaches students, faculty and staff through text messaging, voicemail and email. We use the system to broadcast vital information in emergency situations on campus or for severe weather-related advisories. Students, faculty and staff can register through the RAVE website.

Salve is committed to ensuring compliance with Title IX, a federal law that prohibits institutions of higher education from discriminating against students or employees on the basis of sex in any programs or activities.

Title IX website

Defines procedures that ensure compliance with fire safety rules and regulations for University events. Whenever 50 or more people are expected inside a property owned or leased by Salve, the individual sponsor or representative of the sponsoring organization must review these procedures and confirm compliance before and during the event.
