Film Minor

Film Student

Film is one of the most influential art forms of the 21st century, shaping culture, storytelling and entertainment. Salve Regina University's film minor offers you the chance to explore the creative and critical aspects of filmmaking - learning not only how films are made but also how to analyze and produce content that engages, challenges and resonates with audiences.

Salve's interdisciplinary film minor allows students to explore many aspects of filmmaking and film analysis, providing a dynamic, hands-on experience that blends creative expression with critical analysis.

Dr. D. Matthew Ramsey, professor
Department of English, Communications and Media

Our minor explores film as an art form, examining cultural and institutional values, the histories of national and global cinemas and the "canon" of great films and filmmakers. Students also critically analyze how race, gender, ethnicity and identity shape cinema. By combining theory with production, the minor provides a comprehensive foundation for those passionate about creating meaningful film content.

Choose hands-on coursework in screenwriting and film production, create your own projects and learn the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking, from pre-production to editing. You can also explore the performance aspects of film through coursework in theater, gaining a deeper understanding of acting, staging and storytelling to enhance your cinematic studies.

A Perfect Pair

"The minor pairs well with my creative writing and publishing major because at the core of both is the desire to create a good story," said Audrey Martin. "Analyzing the details and purpose of a film has helped me do the same when working on my own stories. I have also had the opportunity to write screenplays and make short films. I have fallen in love with both the technical and storytelling aspects of film, and I have learned so much from every class I have taken."
