Department of English, Communications and Media

Through theoretical study and hands-on learning, students in the Department of English, Communications and Media refine and develop an understanding of literature, creative writing, media and communications. By pursuing one of the most versatile degrees you can choose today, you'll leave Salve equipped with the wide array of tools needed to successfully communicate in the digital age.

Our programs foster the creative, critical and analytical skills needed for graduate study and for a variety of rewarding careers in fields such as law, publishing, media, education, business, marketing, social media and government.

You may choose to double major in literature and secondary education, which prepares you to apply for Rhode Island teacher certification in grades 7-12. We also offer an accelerated program of study that allows qualified Salve undergraduates to begin our Newport MFA in creative writing during their senior (fourth) year.

Salve offered a way to not only enhance my studies, but also make me really feel part of a community. The feeling of being here is so unique to Salve, and other schools just can't offer that.

Explore Our Programs

Our communications program covers topics such as creative writing, film studies, journalism, advertising, public relations and new media. We also emphasize all aspects of writing: feature, news, press releases and blurbs, as well as editing and publishing, because words are still the basic building block for communication.

Communications program

Our low-residency MFA in creative writing immerses you in the creative life through craft talks, publishing and editing panels and mentorships. The result is a full-length manuscript at the end of the program. The low-residency format teaches you to integrate writing into your day and sets you on the path to becoming a lifelong writer.

Creative writing program

Our creative writing and publishing program offers you the opportunity to combine your own creative work in poetry, fiction and literary nonfiction with an understanding of the world of print and digital publishing that brings such works to the public.

Creative writing and publishing program

Film is one of the most important art and entertainment forms of the 21st century. Our minor in film seeks to understand how and why "moving pictures" are made and encourages students to become powerful analysts and critics of films and their contexts, as well as producers of film content.

Film program

Our literature program explores mythology, contemporary British and American literature, world literature and more. A senior thesis is required and study abroad and internship experiences are encouraged.

Literature program

Our literature and secondary education program prepares you to apply for Rhode Island teacher certification for grades 7-12. You'll learn the principles of literary theory and criticism, improve your written and oral skills, and explore the major genres and periods of American, British and world literature.
