Religious and Theological Studies Major

At Salve Regina University, our religious and theological studies program invites you to explore life's biggest questions through a global and interdisciplinary lens.
In an age when the direction of our culture is all about data, efficiency, celebrity and power, our department offers students a chance to reflect on spirituality, relationships, community and life's deeper meanings.
Dr. Daniel Cowdin, professor and chair
Our dynamic program delves into the beliefs, histories and ethical systems that shape cultures and societies, offering a well-rounded approach to the world’s religious traditions - including but not limited to Christianity. Whether you're drawn to the philosophical questions of faith, the intersection of religion and social justice or the role of spirituality in today's world, we provide the tools to think critically, engage in meaningful dialogue and broaden your worldview.
For both majors and minors, we offer four optional areas of focus - Christian theology, scripture, ethics and world religions - allowing you to tailor your studies to your interests and career goals.

Religious and theological studies major
"My experience within this department has been wonderful. The professors are like friends, but also great leaders – they have been so helpful in where I want to take this major into my career. The program’s strength lies in the teaching of deep theology through religious studies, making it a beautiful blend of learning that prepares you greatly for life after graduation."

Religious and theological studies and philosophy double major
"With this major, there is an integration of reason as applied to faith, which was very compelling to me and not something I had ever been exposed to deeply. The convergence of philosophy and theology and the synthesis of the two as both lived out and explored intellectually have encouraged both critical thought and growth that feels deeply meaningful and transformative."

Isabell Strazza '25
Religious and theological studies minor
"Being a religious and theological studies minor has uplifted my Salve experience, empowering me to view spirituality and the world around me in different ways. Not only has this experience helped me to grow in my own faith, but it has strengthened my ability to connect with people of various religions and cultures on a deeper level."
