Internships, Fellowships and Research Opportunities

Nestled in the historic coastal city of Newport, Salve's history program offers exceptional opportunities for hands-on learning and professional development.

With access to local institutions like the Newport Historical Society, Preservation Society of Newport County, Naval War College Museum and Redwood Library and Athenaeum, our students gain real-world experience in archival research, museum curation, historic preservation and more. These internships provide an immersive way to connect with the past while developing valuable skills for the future.

Beyond internships, we offer fellowship and research opportunities to enrich your academic journey. The John E. McGinty Fund for History, established in honor of former trustee John E. McGinty, supports undergraduate educational advancement and funds the McGinty Fellowship, which provides a graduating student with a summer research position at the Newport Historical Society. Additionally, you can engage in faculty-led research, covering a large variety of topics.

These experiences allow you to deepen your historical expertise while building professional networks that set you apart in your field.

History major Shannon Poggi recently completed an internship with the Newport Historical Society. "Having an internship in your undergraduate career is crucial to determining the paths you want to take," she said. "During my internship experience, it only solidified my passion for museum work. I learned the ins and outs of making museum exhibits, from researching in archives to design. On top of this, I learned the programs Canva and Hootsuite."
