A Stunning Backdrop

The Arboretum at Salve Regina University was established to preserve the natural and historic resources of the campus landscape and to provide a living, learning environment that enhances the educational mission of the University and demonstrates a responsible commitment to stewardship.

We value this land surrounding our campus, and we feel a strong sense of responsibility to preserve it for future generations of students, members of the community and visitors to Newport.

Chancellor M. Therese Antone, RSM

The nationally recognized, award-winning arboretum, which was re-accredited in 2021 as a Level II arboretum by the Morton Arboretum's ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program, provides ever-evolving opportunities for interdisciplinary research, scholarship and hands-on learning across academic programs.

Arboreal work on campus is based on recommendations from the comprehensive tree inventory and management plan. Launched in 2012 as part of Salve's historic tree and landscape program, the monitoring and maintenance plan is designed to preserve, protect and replenish campus trees. Today, the arboretum features more than 1,700 trees representing over 100 different species and Salve is consistently awarded the Tree Campus Higher Education designation in recognition of our commitment to stewardship and a healthy campus environment.

Salve TreeHawks

With a mission to advance the arboretum’s accreditation to Level III, the Salve TreeHawks are a dedicated group of students who believe in the importance of environmental stewardship. Whether cataloging trees and shrubs or participating in community outreach initiatives and Earth Week activities, the TreeHawks are engaged in protecting and promoting our amazing campus resources.

Tree Advisory Committee

A collaboration between students, faculty, staff and community partners, Salve's tree advisory committee meets quarterly to review maintenance efforts around the arboretum and progress regarding the campus tree plan. The group also sponsors tree tours and assists with the annual tree planting in honor of Earth Day.

Students and faculty help to plant a campus tree during Earth Week activities.

The Arboretum Fund

Preservation of our historic campus landscape is an ongoing effort. The Arboretum Fund was established to ensure that future generations of students, families, alumni and neighbors will have the opportunity to view and enjoy Salve’s beautiful arboretum and extraordinary campus environment.
