Common Questions and Answers

Roommates can be requested, but for requests to be granted students must request each other on the housing application. All requests must be made by July 1.

You should review the policies and procedures for housing and non-academic accommodations. Non-academic housing accommodation requests are due prior to June 1.

Unfortunately, residence halls are unavailable over the summer due to conference housing or maintenance and repair projects. We are happy to answer questions about your room - please call our office at (401) 341-2210.

If you’d like to change your housing assignment before the academic year begins, you can contact our office and be placed on a waitlist to be moved. However, we strongly encourage you to experience living in your residence hall before deciding to make any changes.

First-year students are not permitted to have cars on campus. First-year resident students who can demonstrate a need or would suffer an undue hardship due to the restriction on residential parking may request a waiver. If approved, you’ll be required to purchase the parking permit and abide by the rules and regulations established by the Office of Public Safety.

All residence halls are locked 24/7, and students gain access using their student ID. Campus security is available 24/7 by calling (401) 341-2325, and officers can be seen around campus in marked security vehicles. The Office of Public Safety is in Tobin Hall.

Guests are allowed on campus per our guest policy, which is outlined in the student handbook. Students are responsible for the behavior of their guests, for damage caused by their guests and for informing guests of hall policies. Overnight guests are not allowed without advance notification of all students living in the room/apartment in which they are staying.

Our housekeeping staff provides toilet paper but not cleaning supplies. In Hunt and Reefe halls, residents are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms. In Walgreen Hall, the suite bathrooms are cleaned weekly by housekeeping. Miley Hall community bathrooms are cleaned daily by housekeeping.

We encourage you to decorate your room with posters/pictures that make your room your home. However, please do not use nails, tacks or duct tape. Any damage made to the walls will be billed to the residents of that room.

A comprehensive list of items considered to be fire safety hazards are listed in the student handbook. Items deemed a fire safety hazard will be confiscated by the area coordinator and held until you return home.

Gender-Inclusive Housing

Gender-inclusive housing is a housing option in which two or more students share the common areas of a multiple-occupancy apartment, suite or residence hall room regardless of their sex assigned at birth, gender, gender identity or gender expression. It’s a living community that is welcoming, safe and inclusive.

Resident students who wish to be housed by their gender identity, including but not limited to:

  • Transgender students
  • Gender queer students
  • Students who are currently transitioning from one gender to another
  • Students who do not conform to assigned gender at birth
  • Students who do not wish to be identified by any sex or gender identity
  • Students who are in the process of discovering their gender identity
  • Students who identify as allies and respect people with the above identities and lived experiences

You can select your own roommate(s). If you’re unable to identify a roommate, Residence Life will match you with a roommate(s) during the assignment process.

Gender-inclusive housing and all on-campus housing options are not intended for romantic relationships, couples or partners. Residence Life discourages students of any sexual orientation or gender who are in a relationship from living together in a residence hall room or housing unit. You don’t have to disclose your reason for requesting gender-inclusive housing.

  • First-year students: Walgreen Hall
  • Sophomores: William Watts Sherman House
  • Juniors and seniors: Fairlawn Apartments

To foster a welcoming, safe and inclusive living experience, residents are encouraged to observe the following community standards and specifications:

  • Model behavior that reflects a positive value and respect for all identities, including but not limited to gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and religion.
  • Work to create and promote a safe, affirming and inclusive community for all students.
  • Use inclusive and socially just language and the preferred names and gender pronouns of community members.

Housing assignments are for one academic year, and you must reapply each year. Students living in gender-inclusive housing may share a room with students of any gender, gender identity or gender expression.

For questions about gender-inclusive housing, please contact Jim Mournighan, director of residence life, at (401) 341-2200 or jim.mournighan@salve.edu.
