Health and Safety
Study Abroad
The health and safety of Salve Regina students who study abroad is our top priority. All students have access to study abroad advisors who can provide health and safety information, direct them to further resources and address concerns. We also provide pre-departure orientations for all study abroad students to educate them on what to expect in their new environment.
While students have access to resources before, during and after their time abroad, we emphasize that students must take personal responsibility for their own safety, security and well-being while abroad. Although no one can completely guarantee your safety, security and well-being, there are steps you can take to mitigate risk and make the most of your experience.
You can access important health and safety information on all foreign countries from the U.S. Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control. We also encourage you to register for the State Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to automatically receive travel updates and country information. By registering for this program, the State Department can better assist you in case of an emergency.
International Health Insurance
All students participating in a study abroad program are required to have health insurance that is valid in their host country, as well as emergency travel assistance to cover medical and security evacuation.
All students participating in approved programs are provided with comprehensive health and evacuation coverage through Zurich Insurance during their time abroad. However, you must also retain your existing coverage, as study abroad insurance does not replace comprehensive U.S.-based health insurance. We recommend that you consult your own health insurance policy to see what coverage it provides for medical services abroad.
Zurich Insurance provides primary coverage to a limit of $250,000 for most medical costs, with no deductibles or copayments. Coverage normally begins one day before the program’s official start date and ends one day after the program’s official end date.
Some programs and/or countries may require that you purchase a specific type of health insurance on top of what you receive with Zurich Insurance or your own U.S.-based health insurance. Check with your program provider for requirements.
