The Value of a Salve Education
Christopher Fisher '11
Superintendent of Catholic schools, Archdiocese of San Francisco
“My career would have been impossible without my Salve political science education. Through the program, I learned the skills of critical thinking, public speaking and conversation. But, in reality, I learned so much more. Through the study of the greatest works ever written, from Homer to Aristotle and from Aquinas to the Federalist Papers, I developed an understanding of what it means to be human and was encouraged by my professors to consider how, as political animals, we can organize society for the common good. That question is now at the heart of my career, and Salve made that possible.”
Carol LaMastra Weil '24 (PhD)
Adjunct professor and international education consultant
"After working throughout Latin America and Spain for close to two decades in the field of international education and citizen diplomacy, I knew a Ph.D. was necessary to reach the next level in my career. Dr. Giannakos is a dynamic director, and the faculty are ready to meet you where you are while helping you define and achieve your goals. I especially appreciated the truly global scope - offering deep, critical engagement with political systems, cultural dynamics and international challenges across diverse regions. This interdisciplinary breadth and depth enabled me to approach the next stage of my career with a more informed, comparative and culturally sensitive perspective."
Dr. Denise Mitrano '08
Academic alliances manager, Nestle
"One reason I chose Salve was that the class sizes were very small and close-knit and therefore the professors were very available to give all students individual attention and help personalize not only the course material but career and life advice. I particularly appreciated the variety of coursework a liberal arts education provided, which helped shape my understanding and worldview in addition to understanding basic scientific information in my core subject areas." Evan Shallcross ’20 (M)
Surface warfare officer, U.S. Navy
“I can’t say enough about the staff, about the faculty. We were given leeway and full support to pursue any sort of direction, any sort of specialty that we wanted. We were never once told, ‘This is what you will believe, this is the conclusion that you will reach.’ We were given tools to make better decisions, to interpret decisions and to maintain a broader perspective. It’s really changed the way that I look at politics.” Read more about Shallcross' Salve experience.
Sydney Smith '19
Business development manager, Compass Working Capital
"My time at Salve provided me with opportunities to learn more about my personal mission and bring it to life in my career post-grad. It all started when I co-chaired community service for the Accounting and Finance Club - we created a financial education program for middle school students. That experience, plus my time in the VITA program preparing tax returns for families with low incomes, made it abundantly clear that I needed to be serving the communities I cared so deeply for. At Compass Working Capital, a nonprofit whose mission is to end asset poverty, we believe in an economic system that supports all people to unlock their potential and build a life of meaning on their own terms. My connection to the Salve mission has remained strong, and I’m grateful that I experienced the University through a mission driven lens."
