Social Work Major

Salve Regina University's social work program equips you with the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience to create meaningful change in communities. Through a comprehensive blend of coursework and fieldwork, this professional degree immerses you in the study of social work and its role in today’s multicultural society. With a strong emphasis on social and economic justice and systemic change, our program is deeply committed to preparing you to address complex societal issues.
Salve offers field experience for two years, while many programs only offer senior-year placements. I was fortunate to work with two diverse populations and I learned so much about myself as a social worker and what I have to offer to the profession.

With a challenging curriculum and a rigorous fieldwork requirement, our program prepares you for professional careers and for graduate school, where our graduates often enter prestigious programs with advanced standing.

Students and Alumni Making Waves

Annie Avila '22

"I have worked closely with at-risk youth and have been able to provide services and support to families in need. I am proud to use my Spanish language skills in the field, especially to assist communities that are faced with language barriers." Read more about Avila's Salve experience.

“Dr. Mary Montminy-Danna, Dr. Heather Pizzanello and Kelley O’Malley have been so supportive and encouraging through my senior thesis work. We always joke that Kelley O’Malley is like our academic mom, and I just feel like I have built such a close network of just really great people during my time at Salve.”

Kayla Luczak
Social work major
“The Department of Social Work has many great strengths in how we are supported in the field. We have a lot of supervision, and we are really able to advocate for ourselves in the program. And due to the program’s size, I have been able to build such a great community. Everyone in the department is really close and there is just an overwhelming amount of support and love in the program.”

Kayleigh Pier ’23
LMSW mental health clinician
"Having a small cohort at Salve allowed me to learn so much from the people around me. Even now, I still have close relationships with the people that were in my social work classes, and if I’m having an issue or need advice, I can talk to them. I know that they come from the same educational standpoint, and they can not only help me, but challenge me as well.” Learn more about Pier's Salve experience.

Cierra Schultz '20
Clinical supervisor, Perspectives Corporation
"Something I learned from my time in Salve's social work program that really sets me apart is the ability to think critically. It is now like second nature to critically think about all the contexts within my line of work in the field. And I think that comes from the coursework and standard to which we are held in the program."
Field Experience
Social work majors complete at least 660 hours of practical experience - beginning with community-based service learning projects in their first year, continuing with internships as juniors and seniors, and culminating with capstone research projects - that fosters in them a deeper appreciation for human diversity and dignity and teaches them to advocate for social justice.
In their junior-year internships, students are placed in social service agencies, where they learn intake, assessment and referral processes; practice interviewing, conducting home visits and community outreach; and carry a caseload of 3-5 client systems. As seniors, they build on that experience to gain the knowledge and skills needed for generalist practice. Working primarily with individuals and families, they follow clients through each phase of the helping process and also engage in community organizing, policy analysis, tracking legislation and testifying on pertinent issues.
In their senior year, students are focused on case management, running and facilitating groups and creating service plans, serving 5-8 clients.
Recent field experiences include:
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State
- Boys Town New England
- Child & Family
- CODAC Behavioral Healthcare
- Education Exchange
- Middletown Public Schools
- Newport Hospital
- R.I. Coalition for the Homeless
- R.I. Veterans Home
- Salvation Army
- Turning Around Ministries
