Student Insurance

Tuition Refund Insurance for Undergraduate Students

We offer an insurance plan that guarantees a tuition and room/board refund in cases of physical and/or mental illness (85% reimbursement) any time during the semester. This plan covers the academic year and is independent of the University.

The premium for this insurance plan varies from year to year but is generally approximately 1% of tuition (commuters) or 1% of tuition and room/board (resident students) and is billed and payable each semester.

All students are automatically enrolled, and the charge is listed on the fall and spring tuition statements. Students can waive this insurance by completing an online form. Waivers must be completed prior to the start of the semester. Waivers completed after that date will not be accepted, and the student will be responsible for the charge in full. Policies purchased in the fall will be automatically renewed for the spring, and the charge will be reflected on the spring tuition statement. Canceling a renewed plan must also be done prior to the start of the spring semester.

Tuition Refund Insurance for Graduate Students

We offer an insurance plan that guarantees a tuition refund in cases of physical and/or mental illness (85% reimbursement) any time during the semester. This plan is purchased per semester and is independent of the University.

The premium for this insurance plan varies from year to year but is generally less than 1% of tuition. You must enroll in the plan before the published start of each semester. Students with late start courses must enroll prior to the start of the semester, not prior to the start of each course. Canceling a plan must also be done prior to the start of each semester.

Policies can be purchased through the Bursar's Office, and can be requested in writing or by email. Premiums will be charged to the student tuition account and can be paid by mail or online through the portal.

Student Health Insurance

All undergraduates enrolled in 12 or more credits as a full-time student, except for those in the RN-BSN program, are automatically charged for the University's student health insurance plan for coverage effective Aug. 15 to Aug. 14 (coverage is effective Jan. 15 for new spring students). The annual insurance premium will be added to eligible student accounts.

The plan is underwritten by Wellfleet Insurance Company and claims are paid by Wellfleet Group. The plan is administered by University Health Plans. For help with enrollment, waivers or benefit-related questions, call (833) 251-1140 or email info@univhealthplans.com.

If you are considering waiving Salve's plan, please note that some plans are restrictive and may leave you essentially uninsured while away at school. This could lead to substantial out-of-pocket medical costs. Before waiving Salve's plan, you must verify the following:

  • My plan provides adequate coverage in the Newport area for lab tests and x-rays, prescription drugs, hospitalization (including room and board, physicians' fees and surgical expenses), outpatient hospital services, mental health care, emergency room care and intercollegiate sports injuries (for those participating).
  • My plan covers students over the age of 19.
  • My plan covers me through Aug. 14, 2026.
  • My plan does not have a high deductible that must be met before coverage begins.

Waiver process: Participation in Salve's plan is required unless you have comparable insurance. To waive the plan, provide proof of comparable coverage by submitting the online waiver form by the posted deadline. A credit will be applied to your bill when Salve receives the waiver form. This may take 5-7 business days.

  • If you are planning to waive the health insurance to resolve your balance, complete the waiver before the student invoice date to avoid late fees or account holds.
  • If you do not submit a waiver by the deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan and be responsible for the charge on your bill.
  • By waiving Salve’s plan, you are accepting responsibility for the first $1,500 of expenses for an intercollegiate sports injury.

Enrollment process: Students who need coverage should complete the enrollment form by Aug. 1 for coverage starting Aug. 15 and by Jan. 1 for coverage starting Jan. 15.

Although students are automatically charged for the plan, they are not automatically enrolled after the waiver deadline. Students should complete the enrollment form as soon as possible to avoid delays in accessing benefits.

Students who waived the insurance plan may qualify for special enrollment during the policy year if they lose their insurance coverage. You must contact University Health Plans at (833) 251-1140 or info@univhealthplans.com within 31 days of the date you lost coverage to enroll.

Personal Property Damage or Theft

The University does not assume responsibility for damage or loss of any personal property during the school year or vacation periods and does not allow storage in any residence facility other than in a student room. Any theft or damage should be covered by the parents' homeowner's or renter's insurance policy. Please check to see if you have suitable coverage in the event of a loss. If there is not suitable coverage, please know that the University offers supplemental personal property insurance through National Student Services Inc.

The student personal property insurance plans offer varying amounts of coverage and deductibles for an annual premium. Please know that the University will not tolerate the theft of personal or University property at any time.

Salve Card

The Salve Card is utilized on campus for purchases in the Miley dining hall, McKillop Library Cafe, Jazzman's Cafe, Sandella's Cafe, Miley Mart/Starbucks, the Nest and the bookstore. If the card is lost, it can be disabled almost immediately. All lost cards should be reported to the card office, located in the McKillop Library garden level.

Deposits to the Salve Card can be made online with Mastercard or Visa, in person at the Bursar's Office with cash or check, or by mail with a check. Salve Cards may not be used as a cash card. Money deposited will remain until the student leaves Salve. Any money left on the card when a student leaves the University will be returned to the student tuition account if the balance is over $5.
