What's My Why?
I was a first-generation college student who grew up in a small, rural town in Maine. As a child, I read about people, places and things that were far different from those of my immediate environment. While I didn’t know why these differences existed, from a very young age I wanted to encounter them firsthand, which meant leaving a community where people had limited horizons. College was like trying to take a drink of water from a fire hose. I had to push myself beyond what I believed I was capable of, but for the first time in my life, I felt at home. My Ph.D. program involved going to Vietnam, learning the language and interviewing farmers. These were just a few of the experiences that I otherwise would not have had if I had not been curious enough to explore the unfamiliar.
