On-Call Support

Area coordinators are professional Residence Life staff members who can be utilized for support after business hours. They are often one of the first responders to calls regarding a student situation, troubling behavior or crisis. Area coordinators facilitate a professional support network for resident advisors, assist Public Safety staff as necessary, and provide support for resident students in crisis. The area coordinator on call can be reached through Public Safety at (401) 341-2325 or through a resident advisor.

Students who have an immediate safety or wellness concern should call Public Safety at (401) 341-2325.

Emergency Funding

Requests for emergency funding from the Dean of Students Office can include academic-related expenses as well as non-academic needs. Academic expenses include required course textbooks, while non-academic expenses may include an unanticipated trip home due to a family emergency. Requests are received and reviewed on an individual basis. Students are always encouraged to contact Financial Aid regarding possible loan or grant options.

Leave of Absence

If you’re in good academic and disciplinary standing and wish to interrupt your studies for the following semester, you can apply for a leave of absence. In emergency or medical situations where you can’t continue to attend classes during your enrollment, a medical leave of absence may be granted.

If you’re in good academic and disciplinary standing and wish to interrupt your studies for the following semester, you can apply for a leave of absence by contacting our office at (401) 341-2145 or deanofstudents@salve.edu. We will consult with the dean of undergraduate studies to determine if your request is granted. If your leave of absence is granted, you’ll be required to obtain all required signatures from the University offices named on the leave of absence form and return the form to our office. We will then inform the registrar.

Leaves of absence are not granted retroactively and should be requested no later than one month prior to the semester in which the leave will be taken. A student on leave is considered withdrawn from the University and must have permission from the dean of undergraduate studies to be enrolled for credit elsewhere during the leave. Leaves of absence are granted on a semester-by-semester basis.

In emergency or medical situations where you can’t continue to attend classes after the start of a term, but intend to return to the University, a medical leave of absence may be granted. You should consult the voluntary and involuntary leave of absence policies in the student handbook for more information.

If you intend to return to your studies after a general leave of absence, you should submit a written request explaining your intent to register for the following term to our office. To return for the spring semester, submit your request by Nov. 1. To return for the fall semester, submit your request by Aug. 1. Requests to return following an emergency or medical leave will be evaluated by our office in consultation with the dean of undergraduate studies.

If you haven’t started classes at Salve or have been readmitted but haven’t started classes yet, please contact Admissions at (401) 341-2908 or admissions@salve.edu.

CARE Team

Dedicated to the overall wellness of the Salve community, the CARE (Coordination, Assessment, Response and Education) team supports students who are experiencing issues that impact their ability to succeed in and out of the classroom. The CARE team identifies obstacles, develops plans, connects with students individually and ensures that students are aware of the resources available to them to aid in their success. The CARE team is not an emergency response team. If there is an immediate safety or wellness concern, please call Public Safety at (401) 341-2325.

Students are typically referred to the CARE team when they have recently shown a change in behavior, distress or are struggling in and/or out of the classroom. Common concerns include but are not limited to mental health, illness or injury, behavioral changes, death of a friend or family member, financial difficulty, food insecurity and overall stress.

Common signs of distress:

  • Missing class, falling asleep in class or missing exams
  • Dramatic change in energy level, personality, mood or behavior
  • Noticeable physical signs such as cuts, bruises, burns
  • Expressions of hopelessness, fear or worthlessness (in assignments or class discussion)

Any member of the Salve community can submit a CARE report on behalf of any student. You can submit a CARE report through the student referral form.

Once a CARE report is submitted, it is reviewed by a member of the CARE team and typically assigned to a team member within 48 hours. A reporter may be contacted for additional information. Please note that the team strives to honor student privacy, and in most cases information will not be shared back with the reporter unless necessary.
