Center for Teaching and Learning

The Center for Teaching and Learning furthers Salve’s mercy mission by supporting faculty development, promoting evidence-based teaching practices and fostering innovation in the classroom. Through workshops, consultations and on-demand resources, we equip educators to engage diverse learners, enhance teaching effectiveness and contribute to a vibrant culture of learning.

What We Do

The Center for Teaching and Learning serves faculty and staff as:

  • A hub to connect Salve’s educators to one another for the sharing of experiences and best practices, and to support collaboration across disciplines.
  • An incubator to encourage the growth of ideas, practices and community, and to foster the professional development of our teaching faculty and staff.
  • A guide to best practices and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • A platform to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of Salve’s educators.

Programs and Services

  • One-on-one consultations (course design, assessment, inclusive teaching, AI pedagogy, etc.)
  • Syllabus and course reviews (learning goals, alignment, assessment design)
  • Workshops (evidence-based strategies applied to topics such as active learning, AI in teaching, creating a teaching philosophy statement, etc.)
  • Teaching and learning coffees (informal conversations with peers)

Each of these opportunities supports the expectation – intrinsic to teaching in the Catholic, mercy tradition – that teachers make thoughtful reflection a central part of their calling.

Initiatives for Early-Career Faculty

  • Faculty mentoring program: Each tenure-track colleague is paired with a tenured mentor and supported by the center through targeted programming aligned to key tenure milestones. Find more information in our resource hub.
  • New faculty orientation (August). A multi-day introduction to Salve’s mission, culture and teaching expectations, followed by fall programming tailored to the continuing needs of new full-time faculty.
