Three-Year Housing Requirement

Residence Life

Salve Regina University is committed to providing a thriving, safe environment that fosters our students' academic growth and well-being. With a new residence hall planned to open in fall 2026, we have instituted a three-year housing requirement beginning with students accepted for the 2024-2025 academic year.

We understand that students will have different scenarios and questions about this requirement, and we are happy to discuss and work through this transition together. The FAQ on this page will help you understand the housing selection process and possible exemptions.

A new residence hall is being constructed to accommodate additional students on campus. This is the culmination of years of effort. The University values its residential student experience, and this effort will highlight a vibrant on-campus community with a larger cross section of our students living on campus.

The three-floor residence hall has a variety of room types, with most being suite style with four or six students per suite. There are some semi-suite and traditional style rooms. Bathrooms are within the suites and shared by the students who live there. There is a communal kitchen for the building on the first floor and lounge/study spaces on each floor. The laundry is located at the garden level. There will be an elevator and air conditioning in the building.

Public Safety will update parking policies and information about additional spaces as the 2026-2027 academic year approaches.

Starting with the Class of 2028 (first-year students that entered Salve in fall 2024), there is a three-year housing requirement. Students will be required to live on campus for their first, sophomore and junior years unless approved for exemption.

Students who live within a 30-mile radius of campus with their parents/guardians at their legal residence are exempt. Students who are married or have children are also exempt. Additional exemptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis with supporting documentation.

All students are required to apply for housing in years 1, 2 and 3. You must apply and receive an official approved exemption to live off campus during your first three years.

Each person who is exempt must be approved separately. If your friend is exempt but you are not, you would be expected to still live on campus in the residence halls.

Students will be officially notified of the housing exemption during February (six months before the start of your junior year).

Students are strongly encouraged to review University policies before signing off-campus leases. Having a lease does not guarantee exemption from the housing requirement.

Housing rates are reviewed annually and subject to change. Updated rates will be communicated before each academic year.

A meal plan is required for on-campus residents. You may select from a variety of plans including the expanded hours and services in Gerety Hall, and on-campus convenience stores.
