Avila receives award from National Association of Social Workers
Annie Avila '22 fueled her passion for helping families in need during her time at Salve Regina. After graduation, she secured a position as a clinician at the North American Family Institute, a nonprofit agency helping children and adults with mental health and behavioral issues. Avila's hard work has been noticed – she was recently awarded the Promising Practitioners Award from the Rhode Island chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Salve Regina partners with USJ on pathway to master of social work degree
Responding to the increasing demand for social work professionals, Salve Regina and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) have developed a pathway leading to a bachelor's degree from Salve Regina and a Master of Social Work degree from USJ. Through the partnership, up to 10 seats are reserved for qualified Salve Regina students who meet program requirements and are accepted into USJ's program.
Easton gains real-world experience through field placements
As a social work major, Brianna Easton appreciated the extensive real-world experience she gained as a junior and senior. Her senior year placement was at the social services agency Child & Family. "Each family is different, and they all have their own struggles," she said. "It is tough to witness that a child is not having a good time at home. Helping them is important, and I want to make sure they feel safe."
Social work program re-accredited by Council on Social Work Education
Salve Regina's Department of Social Work was recently re-accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. "We examined every facet of the program," said department chair Dr. Mary Montminy-Danna. "We're looking at curriculum, we're looking at who we are and how we interact with the community. We're assessing whether the goals or objectives we put into the program actually ensure the desired outcome."
Parks accepted to graduate program with advanced standing
As Caroline Parks completed service opportunities around Aquidneck Island and the world, the agencies she was volunteering with often mentioned social workers, sparking her interest and leading to a change in major during her sophomore year. Fast forward two years, and she's been accepted into the graduate social work program at New York University with advanced standing.
