Catholic School Leadership

Salve’s four-course Certificate of Graduate Studies (CGS) programs are designed for students looking for continued professional development without the formal pursuit of a master’s degree. Our CGS in Catholic school leadership is a one-year program for Catholic school leaders and those who aspire to become one.

Our Program

Our students embark on an educational journey that explores the mission of Catholic schools in the 21st century. Coursework addresses the four major benchmarks identified in the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools: mission and Catholic identity, academic excellence, governance and leadership, and operational vitality.

This unique certificate program operates as a cohort, with students enjoying two summer residencies at our Newport campus. The rest of the coursework is offered completely online. Students may also apply the courses taken for the CGS toward the 12 courses required for our M.S. in innovation and strategic management.

Through our partnership with the Providence diocese, admitted students who work in a Catholic school or have an association with a diocese in New England receive a one-third tuition discount.

Program Spotlight: Professional Growth

The program has challenged me to examine the foundations of Catholic education through its focus on mission and Catholic identity, academic excellence, governance and leadership, and operational vitality. I am excited to reflect on my classmates’ weekly responses, eager to initiate online dialogue about our individual school experiences and inspired to take our course focus and apply it to my own school environment. I have been able to take this coursework and make changes for the better in our mission statement, our faculty professional development experiences and the management of our differentiated classrooms. This program presents many opportunities for professional growth through practical application to daily school leadership.

Our program is led by Salve’s dean of undergraduate studies, Elizabeth “Betty” McAuliffe, RSM. As the former president of a Catholic academy serving girls from preschool through grade 12, Sister Betty deeply understands what it means to successfully lead a Catholic school. She is joined by an outstanding roster of faculty members from our Department of Education.
