Salve Regina continues to add scholarship opportunities for students. In recent years, a number of new funds have been established by alumni, parents and friends that recognize achievement and provide financial assistance to qualifying students in various majors and areas of interest.
Please read the criteria carefully to ensure that you qualify for the scholarship before submitting an application. When applying for more than one fund, customize your appeal based on the specific criteria for the award. Please do not submit the same essay more than once.
Dr. Janice Cowsill Scholarship
Education majors (by faculty recommendation)
This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Janice Cowsill, a former clinical education professor at Salve Regina University. Dr. Cowsill also held various administrative positions within the Newport school system for more than 20 years. Her family and friends have created this scholarship to assist a hardworking student majoring in education who follows her commitment to academic excellence and awareness of global or local needs through service.
Faith in Service Scholarship
All majors (by faculty recommendation)
Created by an alumni couple who prefer to remain anonymous, this scholarship recognizes junior or senior students who have demonstrated an understanding of the mercy mission through service projects related to Salve Regina's Mercy Center for Spiritual Life.
Jane Murphy Farley '51 Scholarship in Special Education
Junior and senior education majors (by faculty recommendation)
The Jane Murphy Farley '51 Scholarship in Special Education was established by her son Richard, her family and her classmates to honor Jane, a member of Salve Regina's first class, known as the Pioneer Class of 1951. Through Farley's involvement and support of the University, her husband Robert and their children came to know and appreciate the sense of community guided by the University mission. This scholarship recognizes Farley's legacy of caring for others and encourages students who have a demonstrated passion and gift for working with children with special needs. The recipient will be committed to a career helping children to achieve their full potential.
Maria Ferrazzoli Scholarship
All majors (by faculty recommendation)
New this year, the Ferrazzoli Scholarship was established by alumna Lisa D. Ferrazzoli '82 to honor the life of her sister Maria. A recipient of the 2008 Salve Regina Mission Award, Lisa Ferrazzoli has established international schools in Europe and founded a nonprofit agency to build schools in Ghana. To be eligible for this award, students must demonstrate a social conscience and be actively involved in supporting the advancement of people with special needs through their paid or volunteer work.
50th Anniversary Scholarship
Juniors and seniors (by faculty recommendation)
The 50th Anniversary Scholarship was established in 2002 by alumni celebrating their 50th reunion. This award recognizes a junior or senior in good academic standing who exemplifies commitment to the Salve Regina community through involvement in one or more of the following areas: student government, clubs/activities, athletics or community service. It is expected that the recipient will carry the Salve Regina spirit beyond graduation and remain a loyal and involved alumnus.
Sheila M. Jeanes Memorial Scholarship
Education and social work majors (by student application)
This scholarship was established by Eileen Jeanes Jachna '62 in memory of her beloved sister Sheila, who had Down syndrome and passed away on Christmas Day 2009. Sheila was active in numerous activities (art, bowling, Special Olympics) at the James L. Maher Center where she worked, primarily in the horticultural program. Sheila's parents, Thomas and Josephine Jeanes, were instrumental in the founding of the center for persons who are mentally and/or physically challenged. This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who is committed to a career in special education or working with adults who have special needs.
Nicholas V. Kelly Memorial Scholarship
Male juniors (by faculty recommendation)
This scholarship was created to honor the life of Nick Kelly '05, a young man of great potential who always brought a smile to everyone he encountered. Not only did he make great friends, but he also displayed a sense of justice and compassion to all. This scholarship is given to a young man at Salve Regina with similar qualities and goals as Kelly, pursuing an education to reach his potential.
Pioneer Class of ’51 Scholarship
Seniors (by faculty recommendation)
The Pioneer Scholarship was established by Salve Regina's first graduating class in honor of their 50th reunion in 2001. This scholarship recognizes a senior student in good standing who has demonstrated an understanding of the University mission in their actions - academically, socially and spiritually.
Andrea Rizzo ’00 Special Education Memorial Scholarship
Education majors (by faculty recommendation)
This scholarship was established in memory of Andrea Rizzo'00, who graduated with a degree in special education. Rizzo was teaching in Narragansett, R.I., and studying dance therapy in New York City when her life tragically ended in 2002. Her family and friends have created this scholarship to assist a hardworking student majoring in special education.
Meghan E. Strathman ’03 Memorial Scholarship
Education majors (by student application)
Meghan Strathman '03 loved working with children and majored in both elementary and special education. A student-athlete, resident assistant and student teacher, Strathman's death in April 2003, during her senior year at Salve Regina, affected many people in the community. A scholarship was created so her legacy of teaching, leadership and involvement will live on at the University. Elementary or special education students recommended for the Strathman Scholarship submit an essay describing what majoring in education means to them.
Theatre Arts Alumni Scholarship
Theatre arts majors (by student application)
The Theatre Arts Alumni Scholarship was established by Salve Regina theater alumni. Students eligible for this scholarship must have a GPA of at least 3.3, demonstrate service to the Department of Performing Arts, prove financial need and submit an essay explaining why they should be considered. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty and theater alumni.
Vision of Mercy Scholarship
Female students (by student application)
The Vision of Mercy Scholarship provides funding to students who are committed to the materially poor, to peace and justice, and to working with advocacy groups on behalf of underserved individuals, all in accordance with the mission of the Sisters of Mercy. The ideal award recipient will approach the materially poor and the underserved in the tradition of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy. The recipient will be devoted to advancing the human condition of individuals and communities, especially those that are impoverished, disadvantaged or downtrodden.
