Orientation Leaders

Orientation leaders are positive role models that help new students transition to the University community. As one of the first points of contact for new students, orientation leaders are trained provide accurate information about Salve Regina and its services, and to answer questions and ease the concerns of new students and their families.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled as a full-time student
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Good judicial/disciplinary standing with the University
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Office of Student Activities
  • Leadership potential, professional demeanor, strong work ethic and willingness to take initiative
  • Openness to strengthening understanding of multiculturalism, diversity and social justice
  • Positive attitude, energy, knowledge of and enthusiasm for Salve Regina
  • Good teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of team members, students and parents
  • Desire to learn about the University’s community, programs, resources, policies and procedures
  • Flexibility, responsibility and willingness to assist others

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all Orientation events and training sessions
  • Facilitate the adjustment of new students and their parents to our campus and community
  • Explain academic opportunities and procedures
  • Acquaint new students with campus services and building locations
  • Prepare Orientation materials (stuffing packets, making name tags, etc.)
  • Respond to questions, concerns and sensitive issues of students and parents
  • Serve as a role model for new students by displaying the responsibility and maturity appropriate of a student leader

Positions

Students may apply for the following positions:

Student Orientation leaders work with small groups of new students. They lead icebreakers and team builders alone and with other Orientation leaders. They are responsible for bringing their groups to various presentations in a timely manner, answering their questions accurately and assisting with all aspects of the Orientation program. They work under the supervision of the director of student activities.

Family Orientation leaders serve as resources and guides for the parents and family members of new students. They participate in all aspects of the family Orientation program, answering questions accurately and assisting with programmatic needs as necessary. They work under the supervision of the director of student activities.

International Orientation leaders assist new international students in transitioning to campus. They work closely with the offices of Student Activities and International Programs. International Orientation leaders also assist with international student retention efforts throughout the year. They work under the supervision of the director of student activities and the assistant director of international students and partner exchanges.

Important Dates

Orientation (all dates are mandatory)

  • June 1: Orientation staff returns, training begins
  • June 2-9: Training and preparation
  • June 12-13, 15-16, 19-20, 22-23, 26-27: Orientation sessions
  • July 1: Staff departs by noon
  • Sept. 1: Orientation session
