Offered annually, the Expressive Arts Institute is a three-weekend, non-credit professional development program that provides artists, counselors, educators and those in related fields with foundational training in the expressive and creative arts.
Participants learn how to integrate the visual arts with movement, sound and expressive writing in order to facilitate change, healing and self-discovery in both individuals and small groups. Lectures and discussions about the applications of the expressive and creative arts as well as research supporting their efficacy are combined with hands-on activities.
After successfully completing all three weekends of the program along with associated home-practice assignments, students receive a letter of attendance for this foundation training. For 2016, continuing education hours (CEs) are available from the National Association of Social Workers' Rhode Island chapter.
Note: Completion of the Expressive Arts Institute also serves as an introduction to the 15-credit CGS or CAGS in the professional applications of the expressive and creative arts, offered at Salve Regina as part of the holistic graduate programs. Since the Expressive Arts Institute is one way to cover the required foundational materials, priority placement will be given to students who are interested in earning one of these certificates.
Tuition for 2016 is $1,695. Admission is competitive and requires a formal application, which is reviewed and approved by Expressive Arts Institute faculty. Along with the minimum requirement of a bachelor's degree, students must be able to fulfill the program requirements according to accepted standards of the profession as deemed essential by expressive arts faculty.
A limited number of students are accepted each year. Interested applicants should contact the program coordinator, Christopher Carbone, at (401) 341-3122 or email@example.com as early as possible since the training course is often filled several months in advance.
