Salve Sailing Center hosts ‘Sister Esther Open’ Nov. 9-10

NEWPORT, R.I. – The second annual Sister Esther Open, a trophy regatta for collegiate men and women competing for teams in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9-10 at the Salve Regina Sailing Center, located at the point of Fort Adams in the Sail Newport Waterfront Center.

Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. each morning.

The event is also serving as a homecoming celebration for Salve sailing alumni, who will gather on Saturday to support current Seahawks competitors and later attend a reception. Among the Salve sailing alumni attending the event will be Newport resident Rome Kirby, a tactician who sailed on Oracle Team USA that won the America’s Cup in San Francisco Bay in September.

The event is named for Sister Esther Ann Whalen, a Salve Regina University employee for more than three decades who was inducted into the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Hall of Fame in 2008, and selected as the ICSA’s 2007-2008 Outstanding Service Volunteer Award recipient.

Sister Esther, a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, helped start the sailing program at Salve Regina more than two decades ago. Her family honored that legacy by establishing a $100,000 Sister Esther Whalen Sailing Endowment at Salve Regina.
