Performing arts department presents holiday music concerts
Salve Regina’s performing arts department will present three concerts as part of its holiday music schedule. Open to the public, tickets to each event is $8 for general admission and $5 for students/senior citizens. The Newport County Orchestra Holiday Concert, directed by Vincent Mattera, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. at the Casino Theatre, 9 Freebody St. The orchestra is composed of students from Salve Regina, members of Newport community and advanced local high school players. The program will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, Rimsky-Korsakov, Strauss, Vaughan Williams, and other holiday music. Newport Community Symphonic Band Holiday Concert, directed by Peter Davis, will perform a selection of holiday music on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Casino Theatre. Highlights of the program will a include “A Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson, music by the Flute Ensemble, and selections from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s version of the “Nutcracker Suite”. The Christmas Choral Concerts, directed by Dr. Donald St. Jean, will take place on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12 and 13, at 8 p.m. in the great hall of Ochre Court, 100 Ochre Point Ave. The concerts will include University Chorus, Madrigals Chorus, men’s and women’s a cappella groups, and student soloists performing a variety of holiday classics, such as the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, works of Haydn, Bach, Willan, and more. The featured work on the program will be “Christmas Oratorio” by Camille Saint-Saens, for chorus, orchestra and soloists. A reception will follow each concert.
