July 23 - To new students and families: Orientation and Week of Welcome

Welcome to Salve Regina! We are so happy that you are joining our campus community.

Our new students typically participate in a two-day Orientation program in the June timeframe, along with a two-day Explorientation program just before the fall semester begins. Both programs are designed to help you meet people, learn about Salve Regina and its campus and prepare for a successful first year in college.

This year, your Orientation and Explorientation programs will be combined into a Week of Welcome, which will be held Sept. 3-8.

Join Izzy Mangual-Solivan ’22, senior logistics coordinator for Orientation, for a video tour of her favorite spots on Salve Regina’s campus.

Move-In for New Students

First-year and transfer students will move in Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Wednesday, Sept. 2, and shifts will run from 8-11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. each day. Later this month, the Office of Residence Life will provide a scheduling tool in MyHousing for you to choose a move-in date and time.

Two family members from the same household will be allowed to accompany you during the move-in process. When you arrive on campus, please proceed directly to the parking area adjacent to your residence hall, where you will receive further instruction from Residence Life and Safety and Security staff. You and your family members will be required to wear face coverings during move-in.

Week of Welcome

Week of Welcome will provide you with an educational and enjoyable introduction to life at Salve Regina. You will meet fellow new students, learn about University resources and policies, and explore the campus and Newport community. There are several signature events included in this week, including the day of service, Convocation and the involvement fair. A variety of fun and engaging evening activities will be offered throughout the week, such as trivia and an outdoor movie.

During Week of Welcome, you will be assigned to a group of 20 or fewer students based on your First Year Transitions course. You will stay in this group throughout the week, and will be accompanied by one or two peer mentors and/or an Orientation leader. We have identified indoor and outdoor spaces across campus where groups of this size can take part in programming while maintaining social distancing.

Activities will be offered in-person and virtually, and are subject to change based on current social distancing and group size guidelines from the Rhode Island Department of Health.

See the tentative Week of Welcome schedule.

Day of Service

Salve Regina considers participation in community service a visible way to live the University’s mercy mission. During the day of service, you will volunteer on campus with your First Year Transitions class. There may also be opportunities to volunteer off campus with community partners located throughout Aquidneck Island. If you volunteer off campus, you will know where your service site is ahead of time so you can dress accordingly. All students will receive a day of service T-shirt.

A University tradition that officially opens the new academic year and welcomes new students into the academic community, Convocation is a celebration that marks the beginning of your career at Salve Regina. Convocation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Involvement Fair

Salve Regina’s student organizations, athletic teams and academic departments come together during the involvement fair to promote their passions. The involvement fair will be held Thursday, Sept. 10 on the Gerety Hall lawn, and will also be offered virtually.

You can learn more about ways to get involved, talk with current club members and athletes, and sign up for any program that interests you. This is the easiest way to connect with a huge cross-section of the Salve Regina community.

Orientation Leaders and Peer Mentors

Your Orientation leaders and peer mentors are dynamic student leaders who will work closely with you throughout Week of Welcome. These sophomores, juniors and seniors exude Salve Regina spirit and are passionate about helping you transition into the University community.

During the fall semester, your peer mentor will co-facilitate your First Year Transitions with an instructor, and will help you make connections and find your place on campus.

Meet your Orientation leaders.
