The Black Lives Matter community art piece was created by local artists Nycole Marvelous and Jy-Tique Harris, adjunct professor Melody Gamba and students from Gamba's course Arts for Social Action. Guided by the Diversity in Motion Research Collective's workshop "Embodied Power Flower: Intersectionality and the Complexity of Identity and Oppression" and the text "When They Call You a Terrorist: A Story of Black Lives Matter and the Power to Change the World" by Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandele, the piece honors past, present and future Black voices in the Newport community.
