| This carriage house, designed by Richardson and drafted
by Stanford White, was built in a style that is compatible
with the main house across the east lawn. Although conceptualized
in 1874, the building was not constructed until 1912.
Originally combining English, German and American Colonial
sources, it was enlarged by Dudley Newton shortly after
Sherman married his second wife, Sophia Augusta Brown,
in the late 1880s. Following a number of additions and
renovations, today's light-filled interior is open and
spacious. Rose gardens moved from the Fairholme estate
of Anita O'Keeffe and Robert R. Young provide a beautiful
gathering place for summer receptions. |
