| A relatively new addition to Wakehurst grounds, Salve's
70,000 square foot library named for former president
Lucille McKillop, RSM, blends state-of-the-art technology
with sensitivity to Ochre Point's prevailing architecture.
The postmodern, pale gray granite fa?ade echos the Gothic
lines of adjacent Wakehurst and Munroe Center with its
gables, mullioned windows and lead-coated copper roof.
Other ornamental details such as finials on the gabled
peaks echo nearby Ochre Court. While the exterior subtly
offers hints of the Gilded Age, the interior focuses
on today's electronic era. The spacious, sunlit space
provides a repository for 120,000 conventional print
volumes, over 700 periodicals and equipment that can
provide access to advanced information. Computer terminals
throughout the library link users with databases, private
viewing and audio stations, as well as immediate access
to compact discs, videotapes and special reference collections. |
