IMPROVISATIONAL COMEDY TROUPE TO OFFER PERFORMANCE, WORKSHOP

By Public Affairs Staff

Unexpected Company, Rhode Island's most acclaimed improvisational comedy troupe, will present a workshop and performance at Salve Regina on Saturday, Sept. 17.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Unexpected Company, Rhode Island's most critically acclaimed improvisational comedy troupe, will serve as the theater arts department's guest artist this semester, presenting a workshop and performance on Saturday, Sept. 17. The workshop runs from 3-5 p.m., while the performance begins at 7:17 p.m.

Formed in March 2003, Unexpected Company is the only group in the area strictly dedicated to long-form improvisation. In addition, two of the group's comedians have ties to Salve Regina. Greg DeSantis is an assistant director of financial aid, while Tom Gleadow has directed several of the university's theater performances.

Based in Warwick, R.I., Unexpected Company performs an original long-form structure called "The Morris." Starting with a single word suggestion from the audience, "The Morris" is a loosely structured, fast-paced comedy piece connected by monologues.

In 2004, Rhode Island Monthly magazine named Unexpected Company the state's best comedy troupe. The group has continued to garner accolades and recently performed at Scotland's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world.

The workshop and performance will be held in the Megley Theatre. The workshop is limited to 25 participants; a sign-up sheet is located on the Mercy Hall callboard. Seating for the performance is also limited and can be reserved by calling the box office at Ext. 2250.
