UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY INVITED TO SUPPORT THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVES

NEWPORT, R.I. - Members of the Salve Regina community are asked to help those less fortunate during the Thanksgiving season by supporting two worthy causes: The Feed-A-Friend food drive and Sodexo's Helping Hands Across America food drive. Both food drives will benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center's emergency food pantry is open daily and also provides Thanksgiving and December holiday baskets to families in need. Each year, the pantry provides more than 44,000 meals to local families and serves an additional 14,000 meals through the breakfast program.

Suggested items include:

  • Canned tuna, ham, beans, juices, fruits, vegetables and soups
  • Boxed cereal and potatoes
  • Beef stew and chili
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Cereals, rice and pasta
  • Stuffing
  • Evaporated milk
  • Jell-O
  • Cake, muffin and biscuit mixes
  • Pie crusts
Feed a Friend food drive

Members of the Salve Regina community are invited to donate any non-perishable food items. Donation bags will be distributed to residence halls and campus offices the week of Nov. 2, and will be collected the week of Nov. 16. The Feed a Friend food drive is sponsored by the offices of Community Service, Human Resources and Residential Life and the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life.

Donation boxes will also be located outside the Office of Community Service in Miley Hall.

Helping Hands Across America food drive

Donation baskets will be located in Miley Hall, Wakehurst, O'Hare Academic Center, Ochre Court, McAuley Hall, Antone Academic Center, Young Building and the Rodgers Recreation Center through Thursday, Nov. 12. In addition, Sodexo affiliates throughout the country will be attempting to set the Guinness World Record Nov. 12 for the largest food drive by a non-charitable organization in a 24-hour period in multiple locations.
