NEWPORT, R.I. - "Critical Issues in Math and Science Education: A Focus on Our Children's Future," a workshop featuring several members of the Salve Regina faculty, will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 at Middletown High School. The workshop is sponsored by Salve Regina and the Aquidneck Collaborative for Education.
Dr. Martha Rose, professor and chairwoman of the Department of Education, will present the keynote address, "Preparing Decision Makers: The Importance of Math and Science Education." In addition, a panel discussion titled "Why Math and Science Count: Real Live Problem Solving in the Real Life Careers of the Future" will feature Dr. Jameson Chace, assistant professor of biology and biomedical sciences, along with a former electrical engineer, a local chef and a sailor.
Also on the agenda will be two workshops offered concurrently. "Making Response to Math Intervention Work in Our Schools" will be presented by Dr. Caroline Frey, mathematics coordinator for the Newport Public Schools. "Understanding the Journey to Math Proficiency: How Can Math Education Help Children Become Problem-Solvers" will be presented by Judy Droitcour, math professional development specialist for the East Bay Educational Collaborative.
The workshop is open to educators, parents and the general public. No pre-registration is required, and Rhode Island Department of Education CEUs (continuing education units) are available.
