Mission

The Circle of Scholars is a local Lifelong Learning Institute based at Salve Regina. It is part of a large network of institutes affiliated with the Elderhostel movement. The Circle's mission is the fostering of joy and satisfaction in lifelong learning. Founded in Newport in 1994, it offers seminars to members on a wide variety of subjects, including literature, history, science, health, music, art, public affairs, religion, theater and film. The program depends on members themselves to share their professional backgrounds and/or life experiences with fellow students by offering seminars. It also seeks out non-members to present multi-week programs.

Organization

The Circle of Scholars is an open and democratically operated institute. It has bylaws, officers and committees. Officers are elected for two-year terms at the annual meeting in June. Limiting the time officers serve insures that new ideas are periodically introduced to the Circle. At the annual meeting, the year's activities are reviewed and an accounting of funds is reported. Members are surveyed yearly for seminar ideas and proposals. Since Salve Regina provides classroom space, along with administrative support, the Circle often contributes to the university in recognition of its generous help.
