NEWPORT, R.I. – The Monterey Institute of International Studies is currently accepting applications for its 2013 Summer Intensive College English program to be conducted during the summer at Salve Regina University. Partial scholarships are available for this year’s program. Application deadline is April 1.

The Monterey, Calif.-based MIIS is a graduate school of Middlebury College, Vermont. The program, held from late June to early August, is designed for students who currently attend or are interested in attending undergraduate programs in the United States. It offers comprehensive coursework in the English language. Students learn about American history and culture through content covered in class as well as field trips to nearby Boston and New York.

Between 60 and 75 students enroll in the program and are immersed in an environment where English is spoken 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They receive more than 20 hours of instruction per week in English for academic purposes, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and strategies. They also participate in life skills workshops and continually build their understanding of U.S. history and culture.

Classes are taught at the Antone Academic Center and students are housed in Salve Regina’s residence halls. Participants have access to campus resources, including academic facilities, the library, computing centers and recreational facilities.

The Monterey Institute of International Studies was established in 1955 to prepare students linguistically and culturally for international careers. It provides international professional education in international policy and management, translation and interpretation, language teaching, sustainable development and non-proliferation.
