NEWPORT, R.I. – The Andréa Rizzo Foundation’s ninth annual “Walk for the Children,” a benefit for children with cancer and special needs at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and local public schools, will take place on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 2:30 p.m.
The event will start and finish at the Rodgers Recreation Center, 167 Webster St., on the Salve Regina University campus. It is held in memory of Rizzo, a Salve Regina University graduate and childhood cancer survivor who was killed at the age of 24 by a drunk driver in 2002. She was a lifelong dancer and had begun her graduate studies in dance therapy in hopes of helping children with cancer and special needs through her own love of dance.
This 2-mile scenic walk-a-thon along Narragansett Bay is a free family event featuring door prizes, raffles, kids’ fun booth, refreshments and entertaining dance performances by local dance companies.
Art Berluti of WADK radio will be attending, as well as Jena Ribeiro Miss Teen Rhode Island International 2010 who is vying for Miss Teen International.
Each walker who collects pledges or donations of $30 or more will receive a free T-shirt and water bottle. The top pledge raising team wins a $500 award to donate to their favorite children's charity. Every walker will receive a $5 gift certificate from Brewed Awakenings in Wakefield and Johnston.
