NEWPORT, R.I. – The Department of Performing Arts’ Theatre Arts Program at Salve Regina University will be holding auditions for the musical “Grey Gardens” and the play “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” on Jan. 19-20 at the Casino Theatre, 9 Freebody St..

While auditions on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 6-9 p.m. are open only to Salve Regina students, members of the community are welcome join students for auditions on Friday, Jan. 20 from 5-7 p.m. All actors are asked to prepare a monologue and 32 bars of a traditional musical theatre song to perform.

Grey Gardens is a musical based on the 1975 documentary of the same name and will be directed by Tom Gleadow. It follows the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale as they descend from high society into a life of isolation together at the Grey Gardens estate in East Hampton, N.Y.

The book, written by Doug Wright, examines the complexities of the mother/daughter relationship and is set to a score written by Scott Frankel and Michael Korie. The show will run March 29-April 1, Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Casino Theatre.

The final offering of the season is actor/comedian Steve Martin’s first full-length play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, which will be directed by Patrick Grimes. Set at a bar called the Lapin Agile in Montmartre, Paris, the play imagines an encounter between artist Pablo Picasso and scientist Albert Einstein in 1904 when both are on the verge of making major contributions to their respective field.

Through their interactions with each other and the host of characters around them, a debate about the value of genius and talent is opened onstage. The show will run April 12-15, Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Casino Theatre.

Both productions will be a continuation of the program’s “Reality Shows” season, which brings to life plays based on historical events and figures.
