NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina’s American Marketing Association will be hosting a Melanoma Awareness event on Wednesday, March 3, at 5 p.m. in the Bazarsky Lecture Hall, located in O’Hare Academic Center.
The event will share the story of a 2005 Salve Regina graduate, Glenna Kohl, who lost her fight with melanoma in 2008.
Kohl noticed a lump behind her knee while working out in the Rodgers Recreation Center gym on Salve Regina’s campus during her senior year. As a lifeguard, she was always in the sun during the summer and enjoyed visiting tanning salons in the winter.
Guest Speaker Courtney Caulfield, a friend of Kohl’s and a volunteer with the Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope, will talk about Glenna’s struggles and raise awareness about the harmful effects of tanning.
The first 50 people who show up for the event will receive beach bags filled with sun protection goodies and facts about skin safety. There will also be door prizes, and raffle tickets for sale for a chance to win a $300 cash prize. A reception in the O’Hare lobby will follow the presentation. Attendees will be able to sign a “no tanning bed” pledge, courtesy of the Student Nurse Organization.
