NEWPORT, R.I. – A special proclamation to honor Salve Regina University’s rugby team was the first order of business during the May 9 Newport City Council meeting. Members of the team were called to the center of the floor by Mayor Stephen C. Waluk, who read the following proclamation:
WHEREAS, the Salve Regina University Rugby Team claimed the 2012 Division III National Small College Rugby Championship in Glendale, Colorado on April 29, 2012, and
WHEREAS, the Salve Regina University Rugby Team earned a spot in the national semifinals when it defeated Tufts University of Massachusetts 22-19 on November 13, 2011, in the New England Championship and then went on to defeat Molloy College of New York 34-33 on November 19, 2011 in the Northeast Region Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Salve Regina University Rugby Team’s 22-13 victory over California Maritime Academy gave the school its first team championship in any sport; and
WHEREAS, the Salve Regina Rugby Team is ranked No. 1 by the National Small College Rugby Organization, NOW THEREFORE BE IT
DECLARED, that I, Stephen C. Waluk, Mayor of the City of Newport in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, May 9, 2012 as
“SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY RUGBY TEAM DAY”
In the City of Newport and call upon all citizens to join with me to recognize and congratulate the Salve Regina Rugby Team and Coach Michael Martin and his staff for the honor and glory they have brought to themselves, their school and their community by winning the title of 2012 Division III National Small College Rugby Organization Champions.
