WATERSHED COUNCIL, SALVE REGINA TEAM UP TO PRESENT PUBLIC CONFERENCE

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Aquidneck Island Watershed Council and Salve Regina University will offer a free conference designed to educate and engage the public on local watershed issues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at O'Hare Academic Center, Ochre Point Avenue.

Participants of all ages are encouraged to bring water samples from local streams, brooks or creeks for free testing by Salve Regina University students. It is asked that the water samples be taken the day of the conference and the jar sealed.

Other conference activities will include a blind tasting of water from different parts of the state, including bottled waters, and a moderated panel discussion between representatives of the Public Works departments of Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport. Recruits will be sought for the Watershed Council's all-volunteer Citizen Scientist Program. Lunch will be from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Brief presentations will also be given by the following experts: Jim Marshall and Peter Fagan, executive directors of the AIWC; Sister Jane Gerety, president of Salve Regina University; Tina Dolen, director of the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission; Ted Clement, executive director, Aquidneck Island Land Trust; John Torgan, Baykeeper, Save the Bay; David McLaughlin of Clean Ocean Access; and Meg Kerr, director of the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program.

The Aquidneck Island Watershed Council is an independent non-profit organization. The AIWC promotes public awareness of our watersheds as sources of drinking water, scenic beauty, and recreational use. The AIWC believes the right to clean air, water and unpolluted land is a fundamental right of all citizens.
