NEWPORT, R.I. - A project that pairs Salve Regina University students with developmentally disabled adults to help them share the memories of their lives has received a $5,000 grant from the John E. Fogarty Foundation.
The "Defining Moments" project, a part of the university's Learning Unlimited program, is now in its second year. In it, Salve Regina students are helping developmentally disabled learners to collect their stories, photographs, and quotes that chronicle the defining moments in their lives. This information is being compiled in a book that celebrates their lives and teaches others about their important stories.
Through this project, Learning Unlimited is actively helping individuals with developmental disabilities stimulate creative thinking. Additionally, this program influences the attitudes, behaviors, and understanding of others; fostering an increased level of empathy and stronger human connections.
The John E. Fogarty Foundation has generously supported The Learning Unlimited Program at Salve Regina University for more than 20 years. The Learning Unlimited Program is an initiative of the university's department of education/special education, with a goal of promoting an inclusive learning community.
