PUBLIC INVITED TO 7-DAY PHILOSOPHY SEMINAR ON 'ANTIGONE,' 'MEDEA,' & 'MERCHANT OF VENICE'

NEWPORT - The public is invited to attend any or all of an informal seven-day philosophy seminar on "Antigone," "Medea," and the "Merchant of Venice," which is being presented by Salve Regina University professor Dr. Khalil Habib beginning on Monday, July 27.

The free seminar will be run from July 27-Aug. 4 from 6-8:30 p.m. in Room 106 of the O'Hare Academic Center, Ochre Point Avenue.

Habib, assistant professor of philosophy and director of the university's honors program, invites participants to bring any translation or edition of the texts. No prior knowledge of the readings is required.

The schedule for discussion is as follows: "Antigone" on Monday and Tuesday, July 27-28; "Medea" on Wednesday, July 29 and "Merchant of Venice" on July 30, 31 and Aug. 3-4.

In his poetics Aristotle argued that tragedy is about the noble and the harmful and by implication that comedy is about the low or base and harmless. This class will examine the heights and depths of the human spirit through two tragedies - "Antigone" and "Medea," and one comedy, "The Merchant of Venice." Each play present human eroticism, birth, religion and politics in a different light and taken together throw light upon the human situation.

Please RSVP by contacting Habib at Khalil.Habib@salve.edu.
