NEWPORT, R.I. - In a gesture of gratitude for the work of many student volunteers over the years, the East Bay Community Action Program presented Salve Regina University with the "Vision Award" during its Sixth Annual Gala held at Castle Hill Inn and Resort.
In particular, the university and its students were thanked for their contributions to the EBCAP's federally funded Head Start Program. Accepting the award for the university were Darlene Fletcher of the career development center and Juliette Relihan, professor of education.
"For many years EBCAP Head Start has had a relationship with Salve Regina University and its community services, education and work study programs," said Susan Schenck, EBCAP's chief operating officer. "The University has placed countless students within our Head Start and Early Head Start sites in Newport and Middletown."
Salve Regina students work directly in classrooms with infants, toddlers and preschoolers, and learn the value of early childhood education through teacher-shadowing and hands-on experience, Schenk said. Other students work in EBCAP's social service component directly with family advocates where they learn the social aspect of at-risk families and the struggles of living with a low income and other life issues.
Students also work within the program's health and nutrition component, learning about childhood health issues and health care concerns.
"Many of the students, even after fulfilling their required community service hours or work study assignment, continue as regular volunteers," Schenck said. "The children have been given a chance to interact with other young people in a positive and supportive environment."
"For quite a few years now we've been involved with Head Start and East Bay Community Action Program," said Fletcher, who oversees the university's student employment program, and coordinates job listings for on- and off-campus employment opportunities. Now, they're combining with other outside agencies so we will have a lot more students working for them."
