NEWPORT, R.I. - A prospective client walks up to you at a cocktail party and you're caught with a glass of wine in one hand and a plate of hors d'oevres in the other. With the boss looking over your shoulder, you've got to pull off a graceful introduction without spilling a drop of wine on anyone's shoes, including your own.
It's all part of "Social Etiquette 101 for the Real World" and Salve Regina University seniors will get a crash-course in making all the right choices during the annual Senior Class Etiquette Dinner on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. in Ochre Court.
During the dinner, students will learn the proper way to accept and eat hors d'oeuvres that are offered from a tray, what to do with the dinner napkin, how to pass plates around the table and much more.
Students will also participate in a cocktail hour before sitting down for a formal dinner. Throughout the evening, students will receive feedback from master of ceremonies Thomas Flanagan, associate professor in the business studies department and formerly a university vice president. Additional coaches seated at each table will provide more personalized attention throughout the dinner.
This year's coaches are: Dr. Jane Bethune '67, Carol Gardner, Dr. Robin Hoffmann, Dr. Sarah Littlefield, Cheryl Girr Mrozowski '70, Kara Brannan Murphy '99, Catherine Mureddu, Vincent Siravo, Joseph Smith '95, Janet Staff '91, Ruth Thumbtzen, Daniel Titus '94, '98, Lois Vaughan and Dr. Traci Warrington.
Members of the senior week committee and the Senior Challenge committee will speak during the dinner, and students should also expect a special guest appearance. In addition, those in attendance will have the chance to win raffle prizes consisting of etiquette books and other business-related items.
More than 100 students will attend the dinner. Each is required to wear proper business attire.
