Salve Regina's student health education program guides students to seek accurate health knowledge, encourages them to practice sound values and motivates them to make healthy choices. Programs, guest speakers, wellness workshops and special events are developed as part of a comprehensive approach toward educating all students to lead healthy lives.
NCAA Choices Grant
Salve Regina received the three-year NCAA Choices alcohol education grant in the fall of 2008. The grant was designed to assist the University in creating an environment that supports and encourages legal, healthy, appropriate and safe choices related to the issues of alcohol.
The University's specific goals were:
- Reduce the number of on- and off-campus incidents related to alcohol use
- Reduce the number of binge drinking episodes for the entire student population
- Reduce the number of alcohol-related incidents on athletic teams
- Increase the number of alcohol education programs and the rate of student attendance at alcohol-free, healthy activities
Bicycle Loan Program
More than 110 bicycles are available for Salve Regina students to loan on a semester basis. Sponsored in part by the NCAA Choices grant, the bicycle loan program promotes health behaviors and healthy choices among Salve Regina students. All parts of campus and many local businesses are within biking distance.
Peer Education
Peer education represents the best model for change on college campuses. Peer-to-peer communication about health topics, especially alcohol, is the key to positive change at Salve Regina.
Our peer educators encourage friends to talk honestly about high-risk health behaviors, are trained to listen and support others, promote healthy lifestyles and decision-making skills and provide innovative and instructive presentations on a wide variety of personal health and safety issues to classes, residence halls and other settings where students gather.
Red Watch Band Program
The Red Watch Band program seeks to end drinking deaths by teaching students how to handle alcohol emergencies and summon professional help. The primary component of the program is a four-hour training session in which participants learn how to recognize alcohol emergencies and respond effectively. Participants receive CPR certification and are able to understand how alcohol emergencies are medical emergencies that require immediate, professional care.
