Community Preservation Laboratory

Located in the Antone Academic Center for Culture and the Arts is the Community Preservation Laboratory. Students and faculty working through the laboratory have conducted architectural surveys that enable property owners to claim tax credits, secure low-interest loans and provide incentives for them to maintain their properties.

Data collected by students and faculty has also aided municipalities in making decisions about building, zoning, planning and property taxation. This is especially important in a community such as Newport, which is home to one of the largest surviving collections of Colonial-era housing in the nations, several national historic landmarks and an esteemed collection of structures that embody eclectic, and distinctly American, architecture of the Gilded Age.
