The Salve Regina Sailing Team sails out of Sail Newport, located at Fort Adams State Park, approximately 3 miles off campus. We have sailboats (420s) and three powerboats, as well as the use of the clubhouse and facilities during the school year. We sail both in Newport Harbor and further out in Narragansett Bay, allowing for practices to be held in a variety of conditions - everything from big waves, breeze, and current, to flat water and light and shifty. Because we are located in beautiful, breezy Newport, we rarely have sailing called off due to light air.
Commitments
Every year the team is competing for the collegiate national championship which means everyone is sailing on the weekend and at practice during the fall and spring seasons. During the winter the team meets for physical training and classroom discussion on a weekly basis.
Team practice is held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3:00-6:00. Mondays are optional, as they are reserved for personal attention, so team members can meet with the coach and work on individual boat handling and skills. The team has 30 members allowing 12 boats on average to sail at practice everyday.
Most students after a year of sailing will have in their inventory the following: a life jacket (required), dinghy boots, a spray top or spray suit, sailing gloves, and a drysuit. Because this can be quite costly, most people purchase a bit at a time, and the team keeps some gear on hand so newcomers can "test the waters" without making a financial commitment.
We welcome beginners! Anyone eager to learn is a great addition to the team.
