NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's basketball head coach Sean Foster has announced that juniors Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) , Dan Royce (Mahawh, N.J.) and Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) will serve as team captains for the 2009-10 season.
The team's leading-returning scorer and rebounder, Royce appeared in all 28 games (16 starts) averaged 9.5 ppg and 6.6 rpg last season. A two-time TCCC Player of the Week, Royce recorded three double-doubles, posted at least 10 games with at least eight rebounds, and pulled down 10 or more rebounds on five occasions. He reached double-figures in scoring on 12 occasions and scored a season-high 23 points against Western New England on Jan. 24. During a four-game stretch from Jan. 13 to Jan. 24, he averaged 17.0 ppg and 8.5 rpg to lead the Seahawks to a 3-1 mark. He also led the team with 25 blocked shots.
Birrell, meanwhile, led the Seahawks with 114 assists (4.1 apg) while averaging 6.3 ppg and 3.0 rpg in 26 games played (20 starts). He reached double-figures in scoring five times, pouring in a season-high 15 points at Eastern Nazarene on Feb. 18. Birrell also dished out six or more assists on seven occasions, tallying a season-high nine against Curry on Feb. 10.
Hinkson will miss the entire 2009-10 season due to injury. Last season, Hinkson ranked second on the Seahawks with an average of 15.7 ppg and led the team in scoring seven times. He dropped in a season-high 27 points against Worcester State on Jan. 8 and again on Jan. 21 against Nichols, but no basket was bigger than his game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer on the road to beat Roger Williams on Feb. 4. Hinkson also led the Seahawks in steals (64), finished in the top 10 in scoring in the conference, and was an All-TCCC Honorable Mention.
"Our team will be in capable hands this year with three leaders who work well together and have great chemistry, highlighted by their different skill sets," said Foster. "They have been contributors to the program in the past and have an understanding of what we are trying to accomplish with our Men's Basketball program. I am excited to see them lead our team into the 2009-10 season."
The Seahawks open the 2009-10 season on Nov. 16 when they host Albertus Magnus at 7 p.m.
