NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Seahawks - who received 142 total points - return 10 student-athletes from last season's 20-9 squad (9-4 TCCC) which earned the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. Salve Regina went on to post road wins against No. 4 Colby-Sawyer, No. 1 Nichols, and No. 2 Endicott to earn its fifth conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth in the last eight years.
"I am not surprised that, after losing an incredible player like Allegra Lovoy, we were chosen to finish fourth in the conference despite winning the conference last year and graduating only one player," said head coach Cori Hughes. "Regardless of how well we finished last season, it is not what we have done, it is what we do - now, today. Our goal is to repeat - to win The Commonwealth Coast Conference again. And though we are confident that this is an achievable goal, we also know it will be far from easy. we have a lot of work ahead of us."
Head coach Corinne Hughes will turn to junior Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) and reigning TCCC Rookie of the Year Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) to help replace the production of First Team All-TCCC selection Allegra Lovoy, who returns as an assistant coach this season after graduating in May.
Endicott was tabbed to capture the conference crown as it received 180 points and six first-place votes. Colby-Sawyer was second with 178 points and four first-place votes, followed by the University of New England with 173 points and three first-place votes. Salve Regina and Nichols (141 points) round out the top five.
Regis was sixth with 127 points, followed by Western New England (126 points), Curry (98 points; one first-place vote); Roger Williams (88 points); Wentworth (55 points); New England College (54 points), Gordon (49 points), Eastern Nazarene (35 points), and Anna Maria (24 points).
The Seahawks open the 2009-10 season on Tuesday, Nov. 17 when they host Suffolk at 7 p.m.
