NEWPORT, R.I. - October's inclement weather did not deter Salve Regina University athletic teams from "playing for a cure" while helping to raise funds (over $1,000) during Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
"Our fall sports endured some tough weather conditions, but when we got the games going, the athletes became fully involved in making a difference," said Seahawk director of athletics Colin Sullivan.
Salve Regina field hockey literally got the pink ball rolling on October 13 when it hosted conference-rival Endicott College on its Lawrence Avenue field. After the contest, players from both teams, the officials, and families and friends made donations to participate in a penalty-stroke competition. Longstreth, a maker of field hockey gear, donated the pink balls and pink wrist-bands worn by the players.
On October 22, when the Seahawk volleyball team hosted Connecticut College, Salve Regina players donated prizes that were hidden in pizza boxes which became targets for families and friends who made donations to participate in a serve-a-thon contest. Players also wore special white socks with pink ribbons during the match.
Salve Regina soccer players made donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and wore pink jerseys during their games that week. Halftime activities during home contests at Gaudet Field on October 24 included fans making donations to participate in a shoot-out competition.
"Since our athletic trainers had bought a case of pink tape, even our football players were creating awareness for breast cancer with their on-field efforts while donations were being collected off-field," continued Sullivan.
The Seahawk cross country programs, while having no home meets to generate awareness, encouraged donations from its families in honor of recent-graduate Ali Rodino's mother, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Those funds are not included in the total generated from the recent Seahawk home contests.
In addition, while Salve Regina women's lacrosse competes in the spring, the Seahawk program announced it was participating in the Yoplait Pink Lid Program 'Save Lids to Save Lives,' to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
These breast cancer awareness initiatives gained campus-wide attention last spring when baseball, softball, and tennis players collected donations and wore special apparel (designed by Seahawk sophomore Elise Jones) to highlight the cause.
