CAPE COD, Mass. - The Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team was picked to finish seventh in the 2009-10 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East Hockey League Preseason Poll.
The Seahawks - who recorded an 18-9-1 record (12-8-0 ECAC) and advanced to the ECAC Finals for the first time in school history in 2008-09 - received 79 points. Last season, the Seahawks established single-season school records for wins (18), goals (82), assists (104), points (186), and power-play goals (22). In the playoffs, they knocked off seven-time defending conference champion Manhattanville, 1-0, in the ECAC Semifinals. The win was the first over the Valiants in school history.
Salve Regina returns 14 players, including junior Molly Golden (Milton, Mass.), who tied for third on the team with 26 points (12-14-26), as wel as sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Simmons (Averill Park, N.Y.), who posted an 11-8-1 mark with a 2.24 goals against average (GAA) and a .925 save percentage.
Manhattanville was picked first with 168 points and five first-place votes, followed by Holy Cross with 133 points (four first-place votes) and defending tournament champion and NCAA participant Norwich with 130 points (three first-place votes). Saint Anselm (107 points) was fourth, followed by UMass Boston (90 points), Southern Maine (80 points), the Seahawks, New England College (62 points), Castleton State (46 points), Saint Michael's (40 points), Nichols (25 points), and Plymouth St. (14 points).
The Seahawks open the season with a pair of games in upstate New York this weekend. The first contest takes place Friday night at Cortland State at 6 p.m., and the trip concludes with a 3 p.m. contest at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday.
