Seahawks to 'Play 4 the Cure' on Oct. 13

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University field hockey team will participate in Susan G. Komen 'Play 4 the Cure' campaign when the team hosts Endicott College on Tuesday, October 13 at 4 p.m.

Members of the Seahawk field hockey team will wear reminder bands with the campaign slogan 'Play 4 the Cure' inscribed on them, and there will be a pink ball used during game action. The Salve Regina Field Hockey team hopes to draw awareness to breast cancer and raise funds for breast cancer education through this special game. Donations to help fund breast cancer awareness and research will be collected throughout the contest, and all donators will have the opportunity to take a penalty stroke against the Seahawk goalkeepers following the contest.

"Our team is looking forward to participating in the 'Play 4 the Cure' campaign," said Salve Regina head coach Jen Eldridge. "This is a special and worthy cause, and we are proud that we can contribute. Our hopes are that friends, family members and fans of Salve Regina Field Hockey players will come out next Tuesday, support our team's efforts, and participate in the post-game strokes."

October is the height of the field hockey playing season in the United States and is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month of the National Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Play 4 the Cure movement was created by Mystx Field Hockey Club founder, director, and head coach Tina Reinprecht. Tina's longtime desire was to create an indoor field hockey benefit tournament for breast cancer research. A tournament home was found for the event at the SportsPlex in Feastervile, Pa. in 2006. The benefit was dedicated to mothers of players in the Mystx FH Club who fought the fight against breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research and awareness is the beneficiary of the event, and in two years has contributed over $11,000.00 towards the Philadelphia Affiliate of the SGK for the Cure.

Breast cancer affects one out of every eight women in the United States. In 2007, almost 180,500 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed; and although that number has decreased from previous years, there are still more than 40,000 deaths annually from this disease.
